In 1965, a decision was taken to establish Gandhinagar as the capital city of Gujarat state. The idea was to create a functional capital comprising of mainly government servants of the state since the largest employer was the Government of Gujarat.

Gandhinagar, named after the father of the nation is the second planned city in India after Chandigarh. Being a well planned city, the need for an institution of higher education was greater where the children of government servants residing in Gandhinagar could seek education. At the same time it could serve the needs of the rural population residing in the areas on the outskirts of the city. With this idea in mind, the department of Higher Education established the Government Arts, Commerce and Science College.

The college was established in 1969. To start off with, it functioned from a school building in Sector- 29 but shifted to its present premises in 1970. The Commerce College started independently in 1983 and the Science College in 1991.

The Government Arts College has many firsts to its credit as for example; it was the first college in Gandhinagar to begin P.G. centres in the subjects of English, Gujarati and Economics subjects in the year 1986. Today, it runs one of the largest P.G. centres and in certain subjects the only centre in entire Gandhinagar district.

It is said that “take the fire from the past, leave the ashes behind”. The college has learnt from the zeal and enthusiasm of its seniors who painstakingly moulded this institution into one of the best institutions of knowledge. It has a golden history of achievements but its proudest moments have been the vast number of NCC and NSS cadets who have won many accolades while at the same time giving back their best to society.

Cadets of both NCC boys & girls wings have participated in the RDC parades. In the year 1993, five cadets represented Gujarat which is probably the largest number for any college in Gujarat University in a single year. Kavita Italian of NCC girls is today serving as Captain, NCC Gujarat Girls’ Battalion.

This year, in January 2012, Rupal Savadiya represented the college at the RDC parade, on the NSS platform.

In sports, Ruchi Tiwari represented India at the 2005, Junior Asian Games. She has done the country proud by winning a bronze at the pole vault event.

Each tiny step has been a leap towards progress and the college has gone from strength to strength. Departments which did not have P.G. recognitions procured the same either as a Core group or a Subsidiary subject. Since last year, i.e.- 2010, the system of Subsidiaries was done away with and nine subjects function as Entire PG centres. At the graduation level, the college imparts knowledge in eleven subjects.

Any institution’s strength however, lies in its staff and students. The college takes special pride in their achievements.

The jewels in this college’s crown are the alumni which include the current mayor of Gandhinagar, Shri Mahendrasinh Rana.

Students are serving in diverse fields today such as administration, the police force, private entrepreneurship, social service; but the college’s greatest contribution to society can be seen in the number of teachers it has produced. Several Principals and college teachers are the college’s pride. At the same time the college salutes those students who are serving in remote areas of the country as school teachers, bearing the torch of knowledge wherever they go. As teachers, the faculty cannot ask for better “ guru dakshina”.

Today, the capital city has developed into one of the best knowledge hubs in the country. Institutions of both national and international repute have been established. These are IIT Gandhinagar, Gujarat National Law University, NIFT, DAIICT, PDPU to name just a few. Having these institutes in the vicinity, means an opportunity to work with the best academicians in the country. The faculty looks forward to such partnerships in the future.

From modest beginnings, the institution has struggled to carve a niche for itself in the academic world. The college is grateful to the encouragement and support given by the Commissioner, Higher Education, Government of Gujarat. The college shall attempt to reciprocate by translating the visions and policies of the department into reality and this is its humble contribution to society.
